Idea's Generation:

I decided to make a graphic novel that closely resembles a video game series called Shin Megami Tensei. This series is about regular people, normally high school students in Japan, and they end up facing a huge phenomena that changes their lives if not the fate of the entire world.

My first idea is that of a story following a young teenage girl who finds herself trapped in a parallel world after performing a ritual attempting to summon the demon Lucifer. little does she know that she is actually responsible for unleashing a terrible curse onto the town she once came. A portal to the underworld is gradually opening more and more each day. if she doesn't reach the center of the underworld by fighting off progressively more and more powerful demons the closer she gets, then not only will her home town and everyone in it will die. So will the entire world.

After giving that idea some thought I decided against it as, with my limited art skills I don't feel i could pull it off. So, instead. I decided on this idea:

The world was previously inhabited by the human race and only the human race. Every other form of life was looked down upon by us. We belittled and bullied every animal, plant and alien race we came across. We enslave people who don't agree with that philosophy. God tired to intervene but failed miserably in his attempts. So, he contacted the great demon king, Beelzebub and asked for his assistance on controlling the monstrosity humanity has become. He defies God and goes against his will creating a gigantic war between heaven and hell with the realm of mortals being the battle ground. The story takes place after the war and focuses on the character of Yu Hanimora. A guy who doesn't really care. He's only 18 years old and he was born after the conflict so he has no memory of how humanity was nor is he interested in what happened. He lives each day in solace with his sword slaying demons and only demons. Throughout the story you will witness him change as he discovers the truth in his quest to save the world from the resurrection of the Lucifer.

Pitch:

Production:

Week 1:
This week I started research and beginning to generate multiple ideas. My first idea was to make a manga styled graphic novel based on street racing.

Week2:
This week I continued my research into artists and art styles and began to formulate a more clear idea on what I wanted to produce. I stuck with my previous idea of street racing and tried to generate ideas on how it would work in regards to an actually story.

Week3:
I decided to change my idea from street racing to a formula similar to my favourite video game series. Shin Megami Tensei. It’s generally set in modern day and features ordinary people getting the ability to fight demons and to make decisions that give them a moral alignment. Law, neutral or chaos.

Week4:
Sticking with my previous idea of making a story/graphic novel based of my favourite video game series, I did some more research into to so I could make sure I was 100% familiarise myself with the general concept and basic story.

Week5:
I began production by making a few character sketches and ideas as well as thinking about setting.

Week6:
Continuing production this week I made some more character designs and some demon designs. I thought more about the setting and the very basic story outline.

Week7:
This week I worked more so on writing the story for the graphic novel as opposed to drawing anything.

Week8:
With my story idea made and a couple of character and demon designs. I began making some mock up sketches for the graphic novel. I made a few pages of the novel.

Week9:
With some of my pages made, I decided that I had enough time to try out another idea of mine. So, I made couple more pages of the graphic novel but these pages differed hugely from my first tests. The starting area was different and the events were also different.

Week10:
This week I began to make the first page of my final product. Yet again, this idea was different from the other two ideas.

Week11:
I finished the first page of my final product and began producing the second page.

Week12:
I finished the second page and began working on the third and final page of the graphic novel.

Week13:
I finished off the final page of the graphic novel.

Cost:

This a rough estimate on how much it would cost for a company to hire me to do this work for them professionally.

Pencils: £1
Paper: £4
Rubber: 50p
Ruler: 50p
Software: FREE
Electricity: £10
My Time: £5 per hour
Over 13 weeks working roughly 12 hours per week
£5 x 12 = £60
£60 x 13 = £720

Overall: £736

Evaluation:

Now that I look back at my work I feel sort of how I expected to feel. From the start I knew that it wouldn't be industry standard or to a high quality given my poor artistic skills. And, it does show. I mean the art is very unappealing to look at ect. I am however quite fond of the story I though up for this graphic novel (as you can see in the Idea's Generation) I feel that it's strong enough to even be considered as an idea for one of the company who makes the Shin Megami Tensei series to have in their game.

My time management for this project was poor as well if I'm really honest. I mean, I didn't have enough time to really take my time with every single line and try and perfect the art as best I physically could. Also, another problem that contributed to my poor time management was the fact that I had other projects running at the same time that conflicted with the schedule I had made. So, I seriously struggled to find time to sit down and focus 100% on this one project. Not forgetting that i was way too indecisive with coming up with ideas for the story of this graphic novel.
